Students can undertake an internship activity in an overseas business, research institute, laboratory, organization, or any other relevant workplace. Internship mobility includes teaching internships for prospective teachers, research assistantships for students, and research activities for doctoral candidates. To create synergy with Horizon Europe, internship activities can also be carried out within the framework of research projects funded by Horizon Europe, provided that double financing is avoided. The internship activity must be a complementary part of the student's study program. Attending courses at a higher education institution does not count as an internship.
The minimum duration of internship mobility is 2 full months, and the maximum duration is 12 full months. During internship mobility, the internship may be interrupted if the host company is closed due to holidays. A grant is still paid for the period the company is closed. To ensure the minimum duration is met, students must check in advance if the host company will be closed for any holidays and make sure the internship will still meet the minimum duration after excluding the holiday period. Weekend breaks do not count as holiday periods that reduce the activity duration. Internship activities can be carried out during any academic year, and for final-year students, they can be undertaken within 12 months after graduation. For post-graduation internships, applications must be submitted before the student graduates (while still an associate, undergraduate, or postgraduate student). Graduates cannot apply.
Post-graduation internship mobility must be completed within 12 months of graduation. The combined duration of the post-graduation internship and any other mobility activities undertaken in the same study cycle must not exceed 12 months.
Except in cases of force majeure, if students return before completing the minimum duration, the activity is considered invalid, and no grant is paid.
Examples of Suitable Internship Placements:
The following examples of institutions can be suitable internship placements if they are located in an eligible country and are active in labor markets or in the fields of education, training, youth, research, and development, whether in the public or private sector. The list below is not exhaustive:
- Small, medium, or large enterprises in the public or private sector
- Local, regional, or national public institutions
- Embassies or consulates of the sending country abroad
- Chambers of commerce, associations of tradespeople or artisans, stock exchanges, and unions
- Research institutes
- Foundations
- Schools/institutes/training centers (any type of educational institution from pre-school to secondary education, including vocational and adult education)
- Non-profit organizations, associations, NGOs
- Institutions providing career planning, professional consulting, and information services
- Higher education institutions (in program countries, the institution must hold an ECHE; in partner countries, it must be recognized by a competent authority under its national legislation and must sign an inter-institutional agreement with the sending institution before the internship begins)
The following organizations are not suitable for higher education internships under Erasmus+:
- European Union institutions and EU agencies (see https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/institutions-bodies_en)
- Organizations managing EU programs, such as National Agencies
Total Activity Duration Limit
For a student in the same study cycle (undergraduate, master's, PhD), the total duration of mobility activities, including those undertaken under Erasmus Mundus or during the 2014-2020 Erasmus+ period, combined with activities in the new Erasmus+ period (2021-2027), cannot exceed 12 months. Even if no grant is awarded, the total duration of mobility activities in the same study cycle must be planned not to exceed 12 months.
When a student completes their current study cycle and moves to a new one (for example, completing an undergraduate degree and starting a master's), they can undertake up to 12 months of physical mobility again in the new cycle.
Minimum Requirements for Erasmus Student Mobility
To participate in the activity, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
1. The student must be enrolled as a full-time student in any level of formal education (first, second, or third cycle) at a higher education institution.
2. a) For undergraduate students, a cumulative academic GPA of at least 2.20/4.00 is required.
b) For students who have transferred from an associate degree and do not yet have a transcript, the associate degree graduation GPA must be at least 2.20/4.00;
c) For second and third cycle students (master's & PhD), a cumulative academic GPA of at least 2.50/4.00 is required.
3. Students must have a sufficient number of courses or non-course ECTS credits for study mobility. For master's and PhD students in their thesis period, a learning agreement can be made for 30 ECTS credits of non-course workload in an academic term.
4. Within the current study cycle, if the student has already benefited from higher education mobility activities under the 2014-2020 and/or 2021-2027 Erasmus+ periods, the total duration, including the new activity, must not exceed 12 months.
Grant Support
Students are provided with grant support to cover part of the expenses incurred during their time abroad. The grants are not intended to cover all the costs related to the activity, but rather to contribute to those expenses.
Under the Erasmus+ Internship Mobility program, the monthly grant amounts are determined based on the cost of living in the host country. As of 2024, countries are divided into two groups:
